Finally, Some Attention

One of the things that I’ve been concerned about for a long time has been the privatization of the prison industry. Not just for the obvious safety issues (we saw this over the summer), but the fact that we have now created a private industry lobby that directly benefits from having more people in jail.

This has got some national attention in an NPR story aired this morning that shows the ties between lobbyists for the private prison industry and the folks behind SB 1070. It leaves another question unanswered: what will they lobby for next? Extending sentences for petty offenses? Making it harder for judges to give probation rather than prison time? Given the craven way legislation gets authored on West Washington, there is little beyond the imagination.

NB: Raúl Grijalva will be on Countdown tonight to discuss private prison lobbying in Arizona. His segment is tentatively scheduled to air at 5:30 local time.
